Every thriving pet care community has organizations working quietly behind the scenes to give animals a second chance.

This month, alongside our August Business Spotlight featuring Christina and the team at Pawsitive Play in Gray, Maine, we're excited to shine a light on another organization making an incredible impact just down the road: the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (The League).

For more than a century, The League has helped animals throughout southern Maine find loving homes while also giving pet parents the resources and support they need to keep pets where they belong: with the people who love them.

More than a shelter

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is much more than an adoption center.

As an open-admission, life-saving organization, The League provides care for stray, abandoned, surrendered, and confiscated animals while working to connect each one with a loving home. Their mission is simple but powerful: to nurture the connection between people and pets while advancing animal welfare throughout their community.

The League’s approach focuses on giving every animal the support, care, and time they need to succeed.

Rather than working against a predetermined timeline, the team works with veterinarians, trainers, foster families, and adopters to give each pet the best possible chance at a happy future. Whether an animal needs additional medical treatment, behavioral support, or simply more time to find the right family, The League is committed to making decisions based on quality of life and long-term welfare.

That commitment extends far beyond the walls of the shelter and the animals currently in their care. Finding loving homes for animals in need is an important part of The League’s work, but so is helping pets stay with the families who already love them.

In addition to helping thousands of animals each year, The League invests heavily in humane education, community resources, affordable veterinary care, foster programs, and partnerships that strengthen animal welfare across Maine. Their Community Clinic at Baxter, for example, was created in response to the rising cost of veterinary care and gives pet owners access to more affordable preventative care and treatment for minor illnesses and injuries.

Together, those efforts help strengthen the bond between pets and people while giving families more support to care for the animals they love.

How you can help

Supporting The League doesn’t have to mean adopting a pet. If you're local to southern Maine, there are plenty of ways to get involved and help support their work.
