Every community needs a place people can turn when an animal needs help.
In Bridgewater, New Jersey, that place is Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.
Each year, the shelter cares for nearly 1,000 lost, abandoned, surrendered, and stray animals while also providing services that help pets stay with the families who love them. From animal control and adoption services to behavior support, microchipping, trap-neuter-return programs, and pet retention resources, Somerset Regional Animal Shelter serves as an important safety net for both animals and the people who care about them.
But what stands out most about Somerset Regional Animal Shelter is that their work often begins long before an adoption takes place.
Sometimes it starts with a family looking for help before surrendering a pet. Sometimes it is a concerned resident trying to help a stray cat. Other times, it is a lost pet finding its way back home. Every day brings a different challenge, but the goal remains the same: creating better outcomes for animals and the community they serve.
More than an adoption center
When people think about animal shelters, they often think about adoption. While finding loving homes is a major part of their work, Somerset Regional Animal Shelter provides a much broader range of services.
The shelter offers animal control services for Bridgewater, Manville, and Branchburg, helping respond to animal-related emergencies and concerns throughout the community. They also provide guidance for pet owners, support for behavioral challenges, resources for families facing hardship, and programs that help reduce pet overpopulation.
These efforts help address problems before they become crises and allow more animals to remain safely in their homes whenever possible.
That approach reflects a growing understanding in animal welfare: helping people keep their pets can be just as important as helping animals find new homes.
A community effort
No shelter can do this work alone.
Volunteers play a vital role in daily operations, helping with everything from dog walking and cat enrichment to fundraising events and adoption support. Alongside shelter staff, these volunteers help ensure animals receive the care, attention, exercise, and enrichment they need while waiting for their forever homes.
The shelter's impact also extends beyond the animals currently in its care. Through partnerships, outreach, and community support, Somerset Regional Animal Shelter helps create a stronger network of resources for pets and pet owners throughout the region.
At its core, the shelter's success comes from people who are willing to show up, lend a hand, and make a difference.
Local businesses making a difference
One of the reasons we were excited to spotlight Somerset Regional Animal Shelter this month is its connection to our June Business Spotlight, Happy Tails By Amanda.
Amanda Hagicostas, owner of Happy Tails By Amanda, volunteers at the shelter as a dog walker, helping provide exercise, enrichment, and one-on-one attention to dogs while they wait for their forever homes.
When we spoke with Amanda for her Business Spotlight, one thing became clear: her commitment to animals extends far beyond her work as a pet care professional. Whether she is caring for a client's dog, volunteering at the shelter, or supporting local animal welfare efforts, she believes every animal deserves patience, compassion, and the opportunity to thrive.
That mindset is exactly what makes community partnerships so important.
Shelters cannot do this work alone. It takes staff, volunteers, fosters, adopters, donors, and local businesses all working together to create better outcomes for animals. Volunteers help with everything from dog walking and animal socialization to adoption events and fundraising, allowing shelter staff to focus on the many responsibilities that come with caring for animals in need.
Amanda's volunteer work is a reminder that supporting animal welfare does not always have to mean making a large donation or adopting a pet. Sometimes it looks like showing up each week, grabbing a leash, and helping a shelter dog enjoy a walk, some fresh air, and a little extra attention.
Those small acts of care add up, and for many animals, they can make all the difference.
Finding homes and creating happy tails
One of our favorite things about Somerset Regional Animal Shelter is the emphasis they place on successful outcomes.
Every adoption represents a new beginning, not just for the animal going home, but also for the next animal who will need help. Each successful placement creates space, resources, and opportunity for another pet to receive care and a second chance.
The shelter regularly shares "Happy Tails" stories celebrating adopted pets and their new families. These updates serve as a reminder that while rescue work can be challenging, the goal is always the same: helping animals find the loving homes they deserve.
For every pet who walks out the door with a new family, there is another animal whose journey is just beginning.
Ways to get involved
There are many ways to support Somerset Regional Animal Shelter.
Adopting is one of the most direct ways to help, but volunteers are equally important to the shelter's mission. Opportunities include dog walking, cat enrichment, adoption events, fundraising, and socialization programs. The shelter is also frequently looking for foster homes for puppies and kittens.
Whether you adopt, foster, volunteer, donate, or simply help spread the word, every action contributes to the wellbeing of animals in the community.
For those interested in getting involved, the shelter regularly shares volunteer opportunities, adoption events, and ways to support their work through donations and community outreach.
Why this work matters
Animal shelters are often where people turn during some of life's most challenging moments. They help reunite lost pets with their families, support owners facing difficult circumstances, and provide safe care for animals who have nowhere else to go.
Somerset Regional Animal Shelter does all of that while caring for hundreds of animals each year and serving as an important resource for the communities of Bridgewater, Manville, and Branchburg.
Their work is a reminder that animal welfare is not just about finding homes. It is about building a community where pets and people can thrive together.
We are proud to recognize Somerset Regional Animal Shelter as our June Shelter of the Month.
